FAQ

FAQ

Does it cost anything to stay at a Fisher House?

There is no cost to stay at a VA Boston Fisher House.

What are the criteria to stay at the Fisher House?

Family members/caregivers of a hospitalized Veteran or Active Duty Service Member, who live approximately 50 miles or more from the VA Boston can stay at the Fisher House. Guests must be able to care for themselves, and follow the house rules, and have a Social work referral. The Fisher House is for families/caregivers of inpatients, while they are in the hospital.

How many rooms are there?

The Boston Fisher House has 20 suites. Each room has a private bathroom.

How do I get to be a guest at the Fisher House?

Once you meet the criteria, you must contact the VA Boston Hospital Social Worker who will interview you over the phone, or in person, and make the referral.

What are your hours of Operation?

Fisher House is staffed Monday – Friday, 7:00AM- 5:00PM. Guest check in is between the hours of 2:00pm-4:00pm so that we can complete the necessary paperwork and safety orientation. When your Social Worker makes your referral, he/she will ask you to pick an available appointment time to check in to the house. All planned check ins are done by appointment. (Occasionally, Social Workers will refer families on an emergency basis for same day check ins. Fisher House staff makes every effort to accommodate families when this occurs, up to 5:00PM M-F).

What should I bring with me for my stay?

It is important to bring any medications you take, your toiletries, clothing. The house has a guest laundry area, towels, and all the beds are made before your arrival.

What do families do about food during their stay?

Guests are responsible for providing their own food. The Fisher House has a well equipped kitchen for families to use during their stay. Some food items are donated from the community, however families bring food, buy groceries in the area, and order take out. The hospital cafeteria does not have weekend hours, so it is important to plan ahead if you will not have access to a car. The Fisher House staff will do their best to assist you during your stay. Please let them know of your needs.

How Long Can I stay?

Stays are not limited, but are determined on a case by case basis. As long as your loved one is hospitalized, and you continue to follow the house rules your stay may be extended as needed.

Can I bring my pets?

No pets are allowed at the Fisher House.

How do I contact you?

All referrals must come through the Social Work Service at the VA. Ask to speak to your Social Worker. To contact the house about any other matters, feel free to call (508) 728-8781
