Ashley Sam is currently an active duty Air Force captain (promoting to Major this May) who is board certified in general pediatrics and currently completing her clinical fellowship training in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital prior to moving to Saint Louis this summer where she will work as a member of the Air Force’s Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) as well as a pediatric intensivist at Saint Louis Children’s Hospital.
Ashley is a member of a multi-generational Air Force family. She grew up primarily in NJ near McGuire Air Force Base and did her undergraduate studies at Rutgers University where she studied cell biology and neuroscience and graduated Cum Laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. During her time at Rutgers, Ashley was involved in Rutgers University Dance Marathon (RUDM), the largest student run philanthropic organization in the state. She spent 2 years on the board of directors for that event helping raise over $900,000 in that period of time and over $1.6 million during her 4 years of total involvement with all monies benefiting Embrace Kids Foundation, an organization that supports the non-medical needs of children/families with children diagnosed with cancer, blood disorders, and other chronic illnesses. Ashley remains an active member of the alumni association that supports RUDM.
In 2013 Ashley was accepted for an Air Force Health Professions Scholarship and began medical school in 2014 at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, NJ where she earned her DO. While in medical school, Ashley served as her student body president and went on to serve osteopathic medical students nationally as the National First Vice Chair for the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents. For her academic achievement, leadership capabilities, and national level advocacy surrounding anti-harassment policies for medical students leading to accreditation standard changes at osteopathic medicals schools nationwide, Ashley was named National Student DO of the Year in 2018.
Ashley completed her pediatrics residency training at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas where she served as the primary pediatrician for an empanelment of over 500 military children. Additionally, she provided inpatient care in both floor and ICU settings for military and civilian children as well as numerous active duty service members. Upon completion of her general pediatric training, Ashley was selected for Critical Care Medicine Fellowship which she will complete this summer. She was able to complete the Boston Marathon this spring in support of Fisher House Boston, which she considers one of her proudest accomplishments during fellowship training.
